    L/54 Update

I have bought the spange from Doug discussed here http://70.87.163.50/forums/showthread.php?t=481714 and received it today. It is an original spange and the L/54 stamp is the early version used by this company, this info was provide by another forum member. The spange is the same as an L/53 (I compared them). I also checked the catch and found another posting by Marc Garlasko asking who made it and the answer was it was used by several companies including L/54. On another forum there is a discussion that companies in Ludenscheid may have used the same die maker or interchanged parts as there is a lot of simularities in their medals and badges. The fact that the spange came with a marked case makes this a nice set. The slot for the spange is actual longer than a normal spange pin (about 1 cm longer), but the case inserts are marked for the spange, so why the longer pin slot, who knows as we probably never will unless something shows up that points us in the right direction.

      Hi Jim
we've corrosponded on these L/54s (L/53s!) for quite some time, so I won't repeat it all, but just wanted to say one thing again: FANTASTIC!!!
I'm so glad it stayed 'in the family'
and yes the Lüdenscheid connection is interesting and believable, lots of swapping going on. Maybe the spange was designed by L/53, the case by L/16, hardware and sale by L/54 haha. I've still got my fingers crossed that we'll find one marked L/53 you know!
I'm sure if we keep our eyes open more secrets will reveal themselves
Amazing that discoveries are still being made in this hobby even today

and Ben, I think this is Jim's 3rd one! (and naturally I have one in terrible shape!)
which I think are the only know 4
      regards

I agree Jon, we just have to keep looking and comparing.

And yes, these are rare, am glad that I sold my clasps, that would have been another money-pit with all those different, hard to find makers.

If I hadn't had that L/54 ek, I would probably have still doubted the clasp.
The mm does look really weird.

                Here it is.

Jon, it would be interesting to find a marked L/53.

                  another mystery now is:
where is the L/54 2nd class spangen?
all of them are known and accounted for, unless they sold another company's spangen, unmarked?
                  regards
                  jon
