Stupid question Dave, but how can you tell it is not an iron core?
Unless my eyes are failing me I cannot see any paint removed from the core that would indicate the base metal.

Don't the digits of the dates appear a little thicker and more rounded with non- iron cores? It seems that way with the S&Ls.
