Odd BH Mayer EK1 Spange :

Here a question about a BH Mayer Spange - no vein type . This described "original one" in question is up for 200 Euros , ...but in bad shape , ...or ... are we looking at a cast copy ?? Exspecialy looking at the plated pitted reverse . Pin set differs too . I used Trevors example for comparison .

I'm leaning towards it be original
I'd gamble it myself, but in hand would be beneficial

I am in a different boat then Jon here.
Rough edges, lots of pock marks. I lean towards a cast copy on this one.

But I would like to see some closer scan of the wing tips and the area around the catch.

And I do not like the "edge" that I can see on the date bar, lower right side.

See what I can get : some enlargment , ... but lose quality . To me looks like the catch is mounted over already existing 'pocking' ??

These new pictures make me like it even less.

It really looks like pock marks.

And also the point you made about the catch, I do not like that either.

            Best regards

I think like Jon... it seems original but you need to have in hand the bird or better pictures with more details

              this is my last one:

How would you and Jon explain the finish that seems to cover what, to me atleast, appears to be pock marks?

Also, look at all the flaws at the date bar, the are a LOT of parts that does not match.

I have here tried to mark a few of the odd things I can see.

Differences in the area of the claws and how "high" the swaz sits.

(The "claws" on top, is Trevors Spange)

PS Sorry for me spamming this thread.

the different illumination, the corrosion and the pour details of the picture perhaps?

                      another picture of my bird:

I would really like to see a frontal shot of the catch from both spange...taken from the bottom.

But based on what I can see, I do not like the spange in question

The next picture doesn't show a lot, but I just wanted to show the comparison on the catches.

Can't explain the pocking but the details look too strong for a cast copy. Would I personally buy this spange for myself is another question but I tend to agree with the yea sayer's

the greatness of this forum is mainly due to members like Flemming
taking the time to add a little sizzle
but I still think the spange is good
I have an L/56, an unknown maker, and especially a gold wound badge with this kind of pockmarked damage. Seems to be a chemical erosion rather than age/wear etc. Most people agreed the GWB was damaged from chemical polish, or 'dip'
The spange probably was exposed to the same sort of chemicals?
                            regards

                              Hi Jon.

As you already know, I am a little paranoid regarding these spange

And maybe I am a little slow about this one...but how would you explain the differences on the date bar ? I am still puzzled about the differences there.
Especially about the "ledge" on the lower right side, which seems to go all the way up on the right side of the date bar.

I can't stop thinking about a repro that has been treated with something that have etched the missing parts away?

Oh well, I better stop now.

But as you know by know, I would leave this, and find a better one.

                              /Flemming
