Interesting : looking at my other Maybauer it has the worn slightly curved -2 part- 7 and a small hump on the frame . The other number does look like a 1 for some reason ? Did Maybauer have a fine and bold marking die ?
Yes, most definitely a Meybauer. I have one with the same core type, it has very obvious filing to the top right hand corner of the 3 in the 1813 date, as well as the serif on the top of the first 1.
Greg, I'm happy to see you post that cross. Can you please show the jumpring on the other side? I'm very curious to hear others' opinions on the small marks there, which are the only ones I've ever seen like that.
Best regards,
Streptile

OK guys .... I notice now .... an off center struck 7 - with top of the 7 partialy missing - ....... giving the mark a somewhat '1' look . Is this a common found combination ( S&L frame) ?
No Robert .... not collecting Maybauers ... spur of the moment taken cross asvertized as a Deschler / variant . I was not looking for a Maybauer ... unless I can trade or sell to someone else .
First of all .... this is then the right way up for the 7( top incomplete) . Robert's 7 mark is the best 7 mark I have seen that is still appears completely flawless . Even this one is not bad ... some small chips are starting to show though .
Now as Trevor inquired about : the 2 marks on Gregs Maybauer EK2 . The pictures provided with the one I posted ... it too has the same 2 marks which on that one runs the oposite way . Most of the time they are tool marks and one has to look at the oposite side of the ring to find the counter impression .
Interesting Trevor should mention this . Something I started and looked at many years ago .... have to see if I still have those marks somewhere . The problem was not having confirmation of what the oposite side had on it ... so it was just a guess and always shrugged off as tool marks .
There is one senario that strongly suggests these to be intentional when one finds the 'flat oval spot' that surronds them ! Look at any plyers ... the gripping surface is completly sharp and raget > not a totaly flat surface with 2 protruding ridges on them . A flat die will leave a flat 'oval' field around the mark when applied to a round surface . The picture below shows - rather poorly- the flat oval area around the mark . One can find similar marks in the opposite layout - -'raised' marks on an oval field .
Well Robert ... Maybauer used more than one frame and different cores . The connecting bead is a S&L feature and you mean then Maybauer made and supplied S&L somewhere around 30% of all frames for S&L crosses ???
