    5th Don Cossack Badge

    Hi guys,

Almost done going through a large collection to sort the good from the bad. Here's another one that I'm not too comfortable with. The 5, sword blades and reverse hardware seem like those shown as repros on other threads. Anyone specializing in these who can comment?

    Regards,
    Stu

I have only seen photos in books and a few good ones online, but this one seems to lack any of the quality features of known originals...not too good looking at all

Emil Graf made a order post war for the 5th don cossack survivors, they purchased them, and actually wore them as a commemorative badge sometime after the war, and seems like it was eatrly 60s..., the type i usually see are thicker, and have a round pin stud where the pin is many times missing . This emil graf, seems better made, but i wouldn't dismiss it as totally fake, just wouldnt think it was wartime(my own opinion) , i have a photo of the thicker emil graf, but i like the first one posted, its way cool. Of course we know these guys got wiped at fallaise in the poscket, then the rest captured by the russians were taken out and used for fertilizer. The lucky ones got captured by the allies. I would assume there are few of them left now days, veteran soldiers still alive that is.
I would buy that one stu w if i were you, and it wasnt too expensive. I think i paid like 35. or 45 30 odd years ago on this emil graf, if its a vet post war contract reunion piece , its gotta be a good one to own, you can't have enough emil graf variations, as i know for fact they made them as i said , and all i have ever seen is the aluminum type, so if this one is different material, snag it.... Good luck.

The only original one in this thread is the Niemann photo. The easiest things to look at are the shape of the 9- shouldn't have a curl; the 5 has a flaw to the right hand side; the crimping on the pin.
