    KVK2, footlocker found

I found this KV2K in my Great Uncles footlocker a year ago. He was a Medical Quartermaster in WW2 and was in Germany 45-46. He was stationed in a Krankhaus in Stuttgart and I amguessing he found the medal in the hospital. It is in fantastic shape, never issued. Is it commom not to find these with markings? This is just my second German cross to own. Thanks!

It looks like a decent footlocker find. These medals can be found marked and unmarked. This example is zinc based and the finish has mostly vanished over time, something that happens alot with zinc medals and badges.

Thank you Adrian. Is there any way to preserve the medal?

        Here is the front:

That is a really nice KVK 2nd class with packet, to preserve it rub it down with a very light bit of vasaline, that should keep the "zinkpest" away....

Thanks!! And I'm guessing I should keep the medal and ribbon outside of the packet.

There's not alot you can do to preserve the finish as it's already gone for the most part. I can't see any signs of zinc pest (a search for that will show you exactly what it is) and I personally wouldn't do anything to the cross if it doesn't need it. Others may disagree......

I agree. Leave it alone and treasure it as something brought back by your Great Uncle. Put together a display of all your Uncle's medals, collar brass, rank insignia, overseas stripes, etc. and any other knick knacks he brought back. Include this KVK2 with that display...

Is there a maker name on the packet?

Thank you. Too bad, I don't have a "44" - marked example to compare to yours.
                      Does anybody?

                        Where are they usually marked?

On the large ring that the ribbon goes through.

Oh O.K. And just one more question, does the name on the packet reflect the maker of the medal?

                              name on packet

It should, unless the medal got switched off at some point.
