Hi William,

Dating Souvals is an art -- and a poorly understood one, at that -- rather than a science. So much is conjecture and guesswork, since they continued for seemingly such a long time to manufacture EKs after the end of the war. In my opinion, there is no appreciable difference between the one shown in this thread, and yours. I consider any Souval with that pin at least possibly postwar. I am (let's say) 70% sure they're postwar, 30% not. In any case, I think they are not a safe bet. That's the best way I can put it.

Here is an EK1 from my collection with a similar postwar pin. Note the scratches at the top of the pin, where it meets the hinge, that are found on all three crosses currently under discussion.

I feel both the pictured cross subject of this thread and William's, which I commented upon some time ago, are authentic period pieces and not post war.
