    Screwback Spange? JUNK OR GEM?

    Hi guys

Saw this little guy here on ebay (where else? )

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=36047

    What you think?

I know about the clamshell raptor fakes from previous posts and searches but this one, I can't put a finger too.

The eagle does look fairly happy though.

Notice how ebay listings have long stories about a veteran who fought bravely (that's why he got an Iron Cross! ) who passed it to someone's grandfather who was a trooper somewhere who made friends with a sniper that defected blah blah blah....

    So, JUNK or GEM?

    thanks all

I'm completely neutural here, but I can tell you this about the seller. I've know him for about 35 years, and he is my best friend. He called me the day he picked this up, and the story is real. He ran an add in So. Calif. where he lives, and the vet's widow called him up and he bought the piece from her. The guy's name is Bob Thomas, and he is as honest as the day is long. So, I know we've all heard the vet stories, but this story is true. He listed it on ebay the same day he picked it up. He doesn't know German gear very much, and I told him if ebay took it off, I'd put it on our estand for him.

Just though I'd let you all know.

Thank you Steve for your explanation of the story from your friend. As you know we are not buying stories here but sometimes eBay can come up with a real gem. I believe the story from you friend is real and so is his fantastic Spange which he is offering on eBay.

Mr. Wilson you said you searched this fine forum for the Spange which is now for sale. Surely you didn’t look very good because some time ago I posted this thread http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24478.

The Spange now for sale is exactly the same as the one I posted and is very, VERY rare complete with his backplate. From the pictures it looks like the real thing WITH the original backplate.

Exactly the same Spange is in Gordon’s book (without the backplate) on page 167.

I wonder how much it will go for but I am sure the bidding has only just started.

As you can see, the Spange was pulled from Eban today, interestingly enough just a half hour after the owner turned down another offer to close the auction and buy it outright.

As the owner is not a member of the Forum, he cannot post it here. However, for those interested in contacting him about it, his name is Robert Thomas, and his email is robert@thomashouse.org He lives in Southern California. You can see my unqualified recommendation of him above.

If this post violates the Forum rules, please feel free to delete it.

And you can bet your last dollar that it was reported by the loser who couldn't the seller to pull the plug on the auction. The world is full of these creeps.

Yeah, I had an SA dagger pulled. Amazes me the auctions that survive in Germany yet most get pulled in the US!
