In a bunch of TR items I got this past week was this cross. IS it a German chaplain's cross??? Heavy grey metal with skull and crossbones at the foot of the cross on the obverse and a swastika in a wreath in the center of the reverse. No marks that I can see.

Chaplain cross has no Christ and this one is very far from an original. (very rare item, I handled one)
Check the famous reference book from angolia and schlicht about german army as some are pictured in it.

From what I have heard the skull under Christ is to symbolize Christ's victory over death. This was a popular motif in many European nations like Italy.

I would imagine that is a fantasy piece, and if it is not it is one bizarre piece.
WH Chaplains crosses look completely different.

I think it is one of those old nun's crosses of ebony & silver & that somebody affixed a swastika atop the circular emblem on the backside, then painted it. I'll bet if you used a bit of paint-remover on it, removing some of the paint, you'd be able to see the silver & ebony wood underneath.Comment

No wood here, the cross is all metal and heavy. It comes in a grouping directly from a WWII veteran and all the other items are period, so I am sure it came from the period, be it unofficial.Comment

Looks like a one off casting to me. Armies tend to have all sorts of mechanics and journeymen around to fix broken stuff so I wouldn't be surprised if some metalsmith made this either for themselves or for someone who asked for it. Its difficult to know anything about custom items. Interesting item...Comment

It is definitely cast from a Catholic European cross of that era. You can see where the border of the wood inly was on the original cross. Iam guessing it is a period field made piece, it is interesting.Originally posted by AUSGANG View Post
