War Merit Cross 2nd Class?

I recently picked this one up. What is strange is that it is not bronze in color. I
have heard that some late war crosses would loose thier color easily and
then look gray. Please let me know what you think.
The ring has the number 10 stamped into it.

It looks like a later war "kriegsmetal" example rather than the earlier "buntmetal"
