So what is the likely verdict? A replaced core in a W&L frame?

It would seem so now. The frame and back/hinge/pin are from a W&L but as Trevor says, the core most likely from a K&Q.
Keep the Orth and ditch the other.

I agree that the Orth EKI is a good example and will fit nicely in my display. However, the W&L with "issues," though apparently original, may have to be passed on to someone else via sale or trade. Thanks again for all of the observations.
