I never heard of that, interesting.
Sounds like the clasp is "going ballistic".

Jim, I also have a rule that I never clean my items, but in this case I probably would have done the same.
It still looks great.

Douglas5, No, it looks like it was made that way.

Robert Pierce, I don't know. I asked the jeweler and he indicated (prior to cleaning) that he used a chemical solution.

Looks great. The bad stuff is gone, the natural patina remains. I'd leave it alone from this point. Why mess with anything else. Any further cleaning and it takes away the "age" that you cannot put back on.

you can bend rules, not break them
sometimes you have to bend the rules to get these nice results

I would still coat it with olive oil, wrap it in Saran Wrap, and let it sit for a few days. With a well used old toothbrush, you can remove the remaining oxides and preserve the finish. Even a small amount of oxides can do irreparable pitting.

I have a LWGAB, late war zinc piece. I want to clean it with the ''olive oil technic'' but I'm afraid I will *censored* up the finnish
like the paint on the clouds and the lightning bolt can I do this or isn't this a smart thing to do?!
