RK 800 marked, fake, jewellers copy, or ?

Greetings all!

I have had this for quite a long time and I always have liked the wear to it even with the flaw between the 1 and 9. The beading has even wear as well as wear to the loop and it is magnetic. I am aware this piece doesn't fit with the accepted known RK makers criteria that we have all learned to accept. Weight 24 grams, 48x48mm. Is it total rubbish or a legitimate wearers copy? Ribbon? Maybe there were some U-Boot jeweler's copies of the oakleaves and even RK's made in the middle of the atlantic by sailors to bored to continue to pick their noses, but NOT inside the borders of Greater Germany. At least this is what my research shows...

I hesitate to say so, but I consider this a fake. But to be completely PC I have to say this "This is not a cross made by one of the seven official licensed makers as we know them today."

That silly lie has been in the community for many many years. I even as a very beginner was told that it simply means fake.

An easy way to sell a fake as 'real' but still sell it as a 'fake'

Not sure where the term comes from but it is true that some of the very high end awards (knighthood orders etc) from the 19th century were made my jewelers due to the level of craftsmanship involved and of course some were copied for what ever reason.

Don't forget the S&L oakleaves pictured in their wartime catalog, as well as those by others such as Juncker.

This piece IS a fake and Philipp Militaria has sold them in the past (and may be selling them still) for @ 280 Euros.

The core of this piece is interesting, as it is very close to the core on a "postwar S&L" now being offered by Weitze.

I can't see why that Cross at Helmut Weitze's site should be a S&L. But I agree with the postwar definition ... maybe it is the pictures ....

A set of oakleaves from S&L made during the Third Reich is not a jeweler's copy. It is a product of a known manufacturer and maybe even partially mass produced. A jeweler for me is a "one of a kind" thing.

I think that is a very fair definition. There are some jeweler-made "one-off" examples of a number of different items, but these were "custom-made", in my opinion, for individual order.
