    Schinkel Help

I would like opions about this EKII Schinkel that is stamped 800 on the ring. I got permission from Mario (owner) to post. The cross itself looks good and I think it is a Deumer. Thanks Jim

I've looked at this cross several times myself Jim. It is undoubtedly a good EK of the type attributed to Deumer. I've never seen one marked with '800' before so it could be a one off silver example, just the ring could be silver or it could be a postwar mark. I would like to believe it is a silver cross but my gut is telling me postwar mark. Who knows!

How difficult is it to test a cross or a ring for silver content? Can't a jeweler do it fairly easily?

every jeweller can do that .

              they rubbing a little off

and test it with some chemical ...

if aim correct the chemical has to turn red , its silver

              regards kay

FYI Jim, this cross was bought by a forum member from the seller's site, posted here, deemed to have a postwar '800' stamp, sent back to seller, and is now relisted.

A search should turn it up, maybe "Schinkel mm800"
                Best regards,

Why is it so amazing to think that a piece like this might have an 800 stamp on the ring? Schinkels were essentially hold overs from the inter war production of Imperial EKs. There were all manner of EKs made during the 20s and 30s, to include examples marked for silver content...perhaps this was left over stock? IMO it is a nice cross.....

                      Andy,

I think it's a stigma in the minds of most all of '39 EKII collectors. Most '800' stamps on '39 crosses are postwar, so we are suspicious off the get-go.

Right. Plus, there are many, many of these Deumer Schinkel EK2s, but not one that has ever surfaced with a convincing '800' stamp to my knowledge. A genuine '800' stamped 1939 EK2 would probably be worth double (or more) than a "normal" example to some collectors (like me ). Some people probably know about the interest among 39 EK2 collectors regarding '800' stamped crosses, and -- if you were a somewhat intelligent faker -- a Schinkel would be a great choice to stamp '800' on for the exact reasons you mentioned above: leftover WW1 parts, early production.
                        Best regards,

                          Well stated Trevor,

I've got an '800'-marked Brehmer EKII which I am going to take to my jeweler friend (brother-in-law) to see if he can determine if it has any silver content to it. I doubt very seriously that it does, but if so, it will be on the e-stand for 350 EURO!

                            Test

A silver test will leave an irreversible ugly stain on your cross. Don't do it.

Here's the Brehmer I spoke of:

Perhaps someone from the Imperial section could tell whether this was a genuine period (1914) stamp, or a copy of a period stamp. I think copy.

Jimmy, I'll think twice about doing this then.
