This is one Dangerous cross! Looking at it the things I see that have not been pointed out yet are the beading is rather flat (Not Crisp), Also probably a dead give away is the step from beading to frame, It has an actual lip that can be seen in areas when looking at this cross, also the step corners are not even or all corners are a bit different!
What is Your thought on the step Robert? The lip is pronounced on the reverse side 3 O'Clock arm! Is this apparant on Your Example of the fake?

To start with, the frame material is not what you would expect from a Third Reich EK; It's inferior material. You're correct in saying that the bead steps are non-uniform at the outside corners and very narrow. Also, the beading comes to non-typical 'points' at the outside corners. There are flaws on the crown of the beading throughout as well. This is most obvious in-hand. The paint is very glossy.
