    Knights crosses in Normandy

Need some help with a class I am trying to put together for the anniversary of D Day. Can someone tell me how many KC,s were awarded for the campaign in Normandy. I am in Iraq right now , seems like a great place to give an LPD about ww2. We should be back in Germany before Thanksgiving. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Kurt,

maybe there is a specific number out there - I am not aware of it.
One would really need to look into all the specific paperwork for each awardee who got a cross after 6.6.44 maybe until the end of the year in order to verify his unit, participation and possible action. A daunting task indeed!

According to Elite Of The Third Reich - Recipients Of The Knight's Cross there were 198 awards of the RK between 6th June - 31st December 1944, although obviously this total is for all fronts, not just the Western Front.

Thanks for the responses. I think it is safe to say that their were several awarded for actions in and around Normandy. I wish that I could be at Omaha Beach tommorow for the anniversary. I was there twice for Cub Scout/ Boy Scout Trips. They sure beat the Cub Scout events that I remember as a kid in Kansas. That probably has something to do with why I have stayed in Europe all of these years. And the Floh markts , love those 2 euro wermacht ruck sacks.
        Thanks again.

The problem with RK award dates is that they do not relate to the date of the action therefore, for example, an award date of September could well be for an action in the previous May. It would depend on how quickly the nomination was approved, etc.

As Dietrich stated, each individual case would have to be examined to determine that actual date of the action.
