What do you think about the spots I marked? that made me think the guy touched up his cross...

That would be caused by the rubbing or general wear of the cross against the top button or tunic. The original rough texture has worn down to a smooth finish and now gives a different appearence to the harder to get areas. I have seen a "lazy 2" in similar condition.

That's my bet.
