I can give you my impression regarding what I can see.
The area on the surface of the 'box' looks as if at a time it had a label of sorts stuck to it. You can see the square outline of a lighter shade and the rough texture where - I think - one has been removed, and the darker shaded remnants surrounding the square being the true 'epidermis', as it were.
As to the motif! Well, a post addition to my label removal thoughts, and it is rather crude to say the least.
It's definately a box and not a sleeve style outer covering?
Can you obtain or take some more pictures, I have a remote idea.

That's a shame, I wanted to view the 'box' just to make sure it isn't an Imperial sorts with the designation label perhaps removed.
Or even a removed glued postage note from an Allied soldier sending an item home.
Really then I couldn't vouch if it was rubbish or not. As the dimensions and further pic's would have been required to investigate this more so.
As for the cross, it looks like they used a potato, if it is indeed stamped.Comment

The motif I'm not addressing with any real contemplation at all, but I can't say the 'box' is crap, as all I can see is a damaged cardboard surface and nothing else more really to go on.
