I am still learning about EKs but this one's corrosion is odd. It seems to have a great deal more wear and tear on the core and hinge than the rest of the frame. It almost looks like it has been soaked in salt water of some other solution that would leave active rust like that. The wear on it just doesn't look period to me. Like I said, I am still learning and that's just my two cents.
Hi I'm no expert but I have never seen a inner frame with that extreme rounding. It looks like a L/56 on the pin ,If so then my vote is for a fake. The photos I have found for a L/56 cross are totally differant http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...8&highlight=56

the rust is my fault, I had it near a untight window. But that was one of the things that made me suspicious. I read somewhere that one type of fake tended to rust. Especially on the inner core. But I want to be absolutly sure before I put it in the bag.
Hi Nils,
My hunch is that it is a fake, but I'm basing that only on a very fledgling intuition I am trying to develope. I didnt like the maker mark or the hinge/pin assembly. I'm probably wrong and should have kept my foot out of my mouth, but feet seem to be a mainstay of my diet. Will be interested to hear the verdict of the experts
I dont like it either. There looks to be excess material between the 1 and the 9 as well the beading and cross hatching looks very poor as well particularly the inner corner 4 o'clock by the swas it doesnt match to the corner. Over all a poor piece of workmanship.
Sorry, but I agree 100% with Stefan - do ifs, buts or doubts, a well known repro which can be found with over 1/2 dozen different markings. The unmarked ones are more dangerous though and the bogus SS engraved examples still go for good money! The key imo to identifying them is the shape of the top of the main pin, where it attaches to the hinge, and the shape of the main pin in general (ie it tapers to both ends, no "flaring" at the hinge end and no true "coke-bottle" shape).

There are some soldering on the frame. I dont think originals have that.
If you look carefully, the frame is of center. Look at the left and right edges on the arms. The left arm edge/beading is wider than the right one.
