    The EKs that got away...

First let me say, I am really enjoying this forum.
I wanted to post this thread just to get some opinions and share some photos.

In 1998 or so I began collecting the Iron Cross. I was younger then, and soon realized that - even given the comparatively low prices of the time - I would have to limit the scope of my collecting for financial reasons. I was never going to afford an 1870 EK1, forget about a Ritterkreuz. So, in 2000, I decided to focus on the EK2. I proceeded to sell off the EK1s I'd acquired.

This was, as some of you will recall, just after eBay banned sale of TR items, and before the "community," such as it was on the internet, had really discovered a suitable replacement. ePier seemed to be the place, which is where I sold my stuff, but it had a small fraction of the traffic, so I often got less than I think the items were really worth. But I really needed the money.

Before selling, I photographed them all, just to have reminders. In later years I realized that some of what I had were quite nice, and one or two of questionable authenticity. Here are some of the things I sold (the current owners may well be list members...) I'm interested in opinions on those marked "FAKE?" as I'm not sure they are authentic.

The photos are absolutely the best I have.

    FAKE?
    Schinkel EK1 (almost sure it's a fake) 3-piece magnetic:

I remember this one had some serious extra frame material (flashing) on the right-hand side of the 12 o'clock arm.

    FAKE?
    L/13 screwback 3-piece magnetic:

    Very rusty.

Other L/13 stamps I've seen are not enclosed in a box like this.

    And some nice ones.

    Schinkel Screwback
This one, believe it or not, I thought was fake and sold for about $50 (this was before the publication of G. Williamson's book "The Iron Cross of 1939," and before most dealers had websites to reference). One piece magnetic:

    Round 3
Here I knew what I had, and started bidding at $300. It sold for $300. 3-piece magnetic, cased. Usually attributed to Meybauer, I believe. I bought this one a year before for about $90, so I was quite pleased with my profit. But oh, do I wish I had it now. Field-vualted (read: pliers).

Please offer opinions on authenticity and how stupid I was (am) to have sold these last two so damn cheap.

    Thanks
    Trevor

I agree with Grüni, but I think Ben will also like Schinkel "20" .

I like the Schinkel SB and the R3.

Looks like someone try to vault the R3 it with it's teeth.
Why do you think that the R3 is attributed to Meybauer?

                Imagine how hurt I am.

This was, as I said, about 2000. I bought the one-piece Schinkel thinking it was a "Spanish-made" EK1, as I'd seen a photo somewhere. When it arrived and didn't match the photo, and turned out to be one-piece, I dismissed it.

The Round-3 was just listed on eBay with a blurry photo. I thought it looked like a Round-3, so I bid and won without asking. Then I sold it for $300, happy with my profits!

I know much better now. My next 10 purchases were reference books. Then I started buying crosses again.

Ah, to be young and naive.

This is all coming up because now, almost 10 year later, I'm finally in a position to begin collecting the higher grades again... EK1s, really. I held on to a few, so I have a head-start, but these'll be hard to replace.

I always wonder if the new owners of these gems are on this forum...

This was one of my first posts on this forum. I told the story of how I sold a few nice rare crosses, specifically the one-piece Schinkel and the Round-3 EK1, in my early days of collecting.

It's been a bit of a mission of mine to replace these examples over the past two years. I've finally done it.

Here, my old photos of the ones I let go, and the ones I found to replace them.

                  The Round-3 (old):

                  And the new one:

                  The one-piece Schinkel (old):

                  And the new one:

Thanks to you guys for the help and for my friend who let me add this one-piece EK1 (by Otto Schickle, as I now know) to my collection, fulfilling my original goal.

I know where the new round three came from

I have it's mate an EK I Schinkel from the same source.

They both came from the same soldier.

Oh, regret is a terrible thing. The things I have sold...

You've done a great job replacing them, Trevor. This thread also speaks to the hobby as a whole and how it has evolved. I only started using the internet in 97/98. Boy, the things I've seen and learned in the last 12 years!

                        Great thread.

                            Hey Trevor,
I don't think they "got away", I'd say you just upgraded them. Superb crosses friend. That R3 is amazing.
