    '800'-marked 1939 EKII

Gustav Brehmer is the maker of this silver-framed EKII. It's anyone's guess as to why it's frame is '800'+ silver content. Magnetic core.

Interesting cross Robert! Unquestionably a Brehmer.
Is there anyway to know for sure it is made from silver as per the content mark?

I don't know what type of non-destructive testing one could perform to determine the silver content, no.

One can see from the other examples from Brehmer that the 2nd one in from the top left has a silver 'gleam' to it.

                That is true!
Is there any sign of frosting? As you know, many Brehmer EKs retain a good degree of frosting and I wondered if this cross is the same? Did silver EKs have frosting? Would they need to undergo any different process to get frosting to adhere?
Just throwing a few thoughts out there.....

Is the ring open or soldered?

Adrian, the bead step has frosting remaining. You can see the side of the beading does too. Just the crown of the beading has lost it's white frosting.

Luud, the ring is closed, soldered.

I personally believe this cross to be very early. Looking at the swasi on this example, I see very crisp outside and inside corners, as if made from new dies.

Thank you Robert, I was thinking it was the lighting.

I would check all the edges if you can see an other material shining through.
The cross doesn't have the looks of having a high silver content.
Where is the 60 year old patina? Cleaned?

The 800 marks on TR crosses normally gives me the creeps.
IMO the Mark is at least suspicious, All the 800 marked EK2's I have had were for sure NOT made of silver.

Hmmm I suppose it could be postwar stamped. There's no real way of knowing. As a side note I have an EKI that has a 900 mark on it. It supposidly was manufactured sometime in the 20's. I thought this EKII was an early example when silver was still used for EK's. I can't see any evidence of another color of metal on the corners that would normally show wear. Now I'm stumped. In hand it looks like real silver. Cleaned? No, or the frosting would be absent.

It is hard to tell. In hands it is easier to judge.

If it was cleaned, and it is real silver, the oxidation is very fast visible.
And it is very easy to clean in warm water and some soap to make it shine for a while without removing the frosty paint. This sadly happens more often for quick sales.
Sadly I have some examples of such crosses in my files from ek's I had bought!

The rust on the core also bothers me a litlle. Looks like it happend recent.
How long do you have this cross?
