    WWII German Cross in Gold

I have a nice cross except that the black coloring on the sunbust portion has been removed. Can this be restored? If so who could do the job? Thanks.

    Harvey,
Some awardees intentionally removed the finish to make the award stand out more. Unless you know for sure that this was not done wartime, I absolutely would not touch it.
    Best,
    Leroy

Very good advice Leroy! Awards are typically best left in the condition found. Don't clean, polish, rub or anything. When doing so, you remove the patina and hence, part of their history and value.

Same advice here, Harvey. One of the reference books in my collection has a period photograph of a Luftwaffe pilot wearing a DKiG with a "polished" inner star that would normally be blackened. Leave it as is, because there is wartime evidence of such a DKiG.

Some GREAT advice from these three thoughtful Members Harvy! One thing not mentioned is that.... We would love to see photos of the DKiG!
Speaking for myself, I have not seen one with the Blackening removed and would love to see it!.

Agree! I have seen at least one wartime photo of a soldier wearing such a DKiG (a KC holder). Just canĀ“t remember who it was...
