Aren't the positions of medals on bars based on the military hierarchy of the awards and not on the order in which they were earned?

Medals on the medal bars in in the order of their importance, not when they were earned. That is why you see the EK2, before any other awards on a medal bar, as the ek2 was awarded for bravery, the ost medal you got for freezein your axx of on the front and or fighting there. The westwall you got for working on fortifications, so george is right about them being placed based based one the awards merit. Its the same way with US medal today, you could go out and earn a bronze star first and then lets say a silver star, but the bronze star isn't as high of an award as the silver star and it would go in the place behind it. I believe most countries still do their ribbon/medal bars in this way. Matt

The guy could have served in a RAD battalion on the West Wall before being called up and earning the EKII and Ostmedaille
