    Estate sale find!

I just picked these two items up at an estate sale. Only information I could get is that the deceased veteran was a member of the 5th Army.

Very, very small in the center of the pin is the mark L/58

      Max:
What is it that leads you to that conclusion?

        Post War Souval

I believe the pin is more like a 1957 style pin. Originally I said 57 pin, but didn't want you to think I was talking about Karl Hensler maker mark 57.

The pin is post war. It´s from Rudolf Souval, a maker that produced iron crosses during WWII...and after WWII he produced iron crosses too!

So how does one tell the difference from a war time made one and a post war made one if the same maker continued to make them after the war?

I might add that the mark on the pin is quite small, it could be an L/59. I can't be positive until I can find my jewelers loop.

The cross could be leftover stock made during the war and a '57 style pin added post war for the souvenir market.
It would be good to see a better shot of the front, it looks like a dipping three core and I think I can make out the die flaw on the top of the 12 o'clock arm.

It's WW2 Frame and core, but like others have said the pin is postwar. All the pictures in the world won't change that fact.

Not looking to change facts, I just want to know what I have.

                    Thank you.

I know you are not. But fact remains. No one else will tell you any different than all the people up top.

Okay then, are we all in agreement? This is an original frame and core with a replaced post war Souval pin?

Mix of pre and post war parts...IMHO.

                          Hi Mike,

That's a Souval frame and Souval core but has a post war pin. If you look at the Souval thread pinned to the top of this Cross Forum you can read about this type of EK.

Your frame is typical pre May 45 in that it has the rounded inner beading adjacent to the swas, extended center beads in each of the 8 arm corners and a die flaw that connects the 2nd-3rd-4th beads, from the left, on the horizontal portion of the 12 o'clock arm.

The core has the fat swas (as opposed to thin swas used by Orth in Souval frames) and it has a Dipping or Dipped 3. Look at the 1939. See how the 3 is lower than the 19_9? You will see what a war time pin looks like in the article I mentioned.

I hope some of this has helped.

                          Regards,
                          Stu

I don't think that's a replacement pin. War time frame and core yes but assembled post war with post war pin. Have a look at other Souval hardware and you will see what I'm writing about.

                            Regards,
                            Stu

Thank you so much Stu, THAT is exactly the information I was hoping for! One other question, what or who is "Orth?"
