Iron Cross - 1st and 2nd class

Forgive my ignorence, but as I said in another post here, I'm quite fresh at german militaria or militaria at all for that matter.
I've read somewhere that the difference between the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class is that the 1st class is either at pinned back or srew back medal and the 2nd class is with a ribbon.
Is it as simpel as that?

I suggest you buy yourself Gordons book "The Iron Cross of 1939". This will bring you up to speed very fast and is interesting reading.
