    Yes, it is an original Mayer. It appears that someone tried to denazify the cross by hammering the swasi flat. It didn't work!

      Ah im glad you said that robert, i had a look at this cross, i thought it was ok myself, but i didnt want to say!

      Your right it didnt work, it has a nice patina on the frame though

              What was the most common method of removing the swastika? Was it filing?

              Ive seen a few crosses where they arent bothered about the beading and have just filed a load of that off aswell. Ive never seen this method before

                Rotary files were in use by jewelers and machine shops in those days. But, I think many tried, as you said, to remove the swasi by hand-filing. And, this really destroyed the surrounding area as well.

                  This might be a stupid question, but, when did they actually start removing the swastikas from their awards?

                  It wouldnt have been the day after the war ended, that would be the last thing on their minds. Could it have been when they tried to join the bundeswehr? Or would that have been too late? Im not sure when the bundeswehr was created.

                  Sorry for all the questions but its intresting
