    70 or 76?

This EK2 was sold to me as a 70 but as far as I can see, it is very similar indeed to my 76. What do you think?

The '70' and '76' EKII look very much alike, but seeing the dates of both, I would settle on your cross being a '76'. The slanted top on the '3' in 1939 is where I draw my conclusion.

Thanks for this opinion. I have been staring at the 70 and 76 crosses which are posted in the Members' section (George's crosses I think) 'till my brain hurts and I see a slanted 3 on the 70 Help!

Unfortunately the cross referenced as a "70" in the member's section is indeed a misidentified "76." This fact has been referred to the individuals in charge of correcting such errors, but it has not been fixed yet.
"76s" are often mistaked for "70s" due to poor marks.

Thank you, but I'm looking for an original '70' myself...

I captured these files from the WAF years ago, and don't know who the owner of this cross is, so please forgive me for using them here. I will delete if you like. This mark looks different than the '76', and the flat-topped '3' is different than the slanted-top '3' of the '76'.

I never saw an original EK II with maker's mark 70.

Yes, the differences are obvious. Thanks.

Looking at these maker's marks gives us a clear picture of the 70 mark vs. the 76. The top left photo is my 76, with it's 'square' bottom of the '6', yours (top right) the same. But, look at the mark of the 70 (bottom photo), the round bottom of the '0'.
