    preserving iron crosses?

Is there something you can put on iron crosses to keep them from rusting, that won't damage the finish?
    Thanks all

The best advice is not put anything on a cross. However, be proactive and keep the cross away from moisture and/or humidity ...

Have a look at the Conservation and safe keeping forum here on the WAF, Good info and ideas there!

IMO, Darrell summed it up perfectly. When you buy a cross how do you know if it has or hasn't been treated with something? And, if you should add something to that cross, what are the possibilities of the two treatments having a chemical reaction, causing the cross irreversible damage!? Read Darrell's comment carefully.

Do not add anything. Iron + Oxygen + Water = Rust. Take away one and rust is not a problem.

              1. Can't take away iron .. or you have no cross.
              2. Impossible to take away O2.
              3. Only thing you can minimize is Moisture / Humidity.

                The formula Darrell. The formula.
To understand rust one have to remeber the formula: Iron + Oxygen + Water = Rust. Take away one and rust is not a problem.
Number 3 on your list is good. Controlling moisture (Water = H2O) is taking away one, and thus breaking the chain: Iron + Oxygen + Water

                  Just like Fire.

Fire = Fuel + Oxygen + Ignition Source
