    Ekii 55

The discovery of a couple of 113 EK2's I got 25 years ago being fakes has got me digging out some other EK2's I've had in my collection for 25 years +.

The first one is a 55 JE Hammer & Sohne, as far as I can tell this looks good, what do you think?

Judging by the frame flaws, looks okay as far as originality. The core looks like it might be repainted though...may also just be the pictures.

        Hank, thanks for your comments.

The core is in a bit of a state, there is a lot of flaking of the paint and it has had some form of light oil applied to it (I assume to try and stop the rust which is also present) - the oil has been there for all the years (25 plus) I've had it - so I suspect this has probably cuased more harm than good.

I think the core has been repainted, there appear to be licks of paint on the inside of the frame.

The EK shows all the details I would expect on a "55"
Except the paint. I also think also that it is most likely repainted.

Core deatails are lost due to thicker paint layer.
I encountered this on many different makers that were wartime painted.

In this case I THINK it's because an extra layer of paint is applied.

Mike, like the others have said, your cross is 100% original, just a little restoration paint. It's hard to find a decent '55' that shows minor frame flaws. I have (4), and they're all heavily flawed.

Hmmm, I wonder if the frame flaws on these "55s" are consistant. That is, do the same flaws appear in the same places on different examples of crosses?

                    Hi George,

I don't have photos of all my 55's, just one, but the flaws progressively worsen in key areas. My worst cross is nearly fully flawed throughout the entire frame.

Kay, the core as far as I'm concerned has been re-painted - that is why the details are not sharp.

55s always have that roundish inner flange on the bottom 3 o clock frame, easiest cross besides a W&L for me to pick out. Looking at the inner core by the frame where some rust has set in and some paint flaked off strangely enough it looks like original paint to me. Try and wipe some of that oil off in the inner frame using a sharp ended baby q-tip .

Study my 55, I can't see flaws, like on Roberts 55, or atleast not a lot... all the frosting is there, but it is sloppy. Let me know if more pix are needed.

This is indeed a very special cross

                            Dion, thanks for the information.

I have tried to remove some of the oil using cotton buds (q-tips), a little came off but not a lot as you can see from the original pics. I'll try with some absorbant tissue and see how that goes.

They make a special type of q tips for babies and it has a small pointed nipple end, it can almost get right under the frame.
