    Marks...

    Hi Douglas,

Thanks for this further explanation. I often wondered the significance of the different marks.

    Kind Regards,
    Stu

While trying to learn about my new L59 from Stu the other day, I search L59 and ran across a thread showing a cross that was repaired and had Jewelers code etched on pin and below the hinge. I will search again and post the link here for those interested?
Thanks Stu and Douglass for the education!
As for the Swasi height on the L59? it is very low to the core as opposed to my C.F. Zimmermann MM20... The swastika on the 20 is level with the beading.
More Alois Rettenmeyer L59 maker mark variations would be welcome! If any members would like to post their crosses here?
That is if OK by Kay? as this is his thread!
Off to search for the old thread showing L59 repaired by a different jeweller!

I know that one ... I picked up on that one years ago , .. very interesting one .

What most do not know is that Rettenmaier had an early pin recall !!! Yes a recall !!
I have seen and read the recall letter . You had the choice of exchange in accordance as stated on the LDO card that comes with the LDO award .
This goes with this fact well and some that could not be contacted anymore had their EK1s repaired . This was Rettermaiers own pin set that was flawed . From this time on they used many pin sets .
how ever if you look closely you will see in the reference posting that the pin anchor is also marked :* 59 on the bottom pin looping , indicating this repair place was doing repair work for L/59 by attaching these marked pin sets .
I cross owner never knew it was there !

              This thread keeps getting better!
Douglas, Is this recall letter in your files? Or can it be found here on the forum? I am most interested in this and wouder if Rettenmaier supplied the pins for replacement? Hence the *59 on the loop of the pin? Or if any available pin was used for this type of hinge?
Keep the info coming here Gang, as this to me is facinating!
I wonder if Williamson's book covers any of this? or do the other EK books? I sadly do not own a copy yet as I am less than 6 months into the EK collecting habit. And the asking price of these books is as much as a very nice EK2!!!!

                Well Kevin ,
I wish I owned that letter , but I do not . Back in 75 in Munich where I saw the letter and personally talked to the vet ,... it was a part of the document grouping that he was selling with his fully hung uniform , awards and Army dagger . 3000 DM back then . A friend I met back then had taken pictures of the entire documentation and uniform . Shortly after returning back from his vacation he moved and we lost contact , I never got pictures of the letter I wanted to go with the EK1 . As an Oberst then ( a WW1 vet too) he had gotten a 65 as his issue EK1 and this L/59 was an private ordered 2nd EK 1 . One of the 3 letters also stated that the EK was silver marked - with a Diamond , which is one of the silver marks . I have only identified 2 sofar . He waited a long time for this early L/59 and it was not cheap as he asked for high grade silver and he wanted it vaulted as well ! The recall came within 2 months of getting it ,...
the pin anchors were braking off . As faith would have it he lost a leg in 42 and never saw any more field duty . The L/59 remained unworn anyway . He only used the 65 .
As much as I can put together Rettenmaier supplied the * 59 marked pins to that repair place . As in the old post 0.1 4377 as to the best I can make out .
The 0.1 would indicate a repair done by the Ordenshersteller-Gemeinschaft, Pforzheim = Awards manufacturing - Co-op Pforzheim . 43 would fit for the year and as a guess 77 = worked Id number ?
As there are 12 different numbers , this prefix was necessary to keep them apart .
                Hope this helps, Douglas

Excellent information Douglas! 3000DM for all that? Wow!!! So we have Rettenmeyer supplying the repair pins then eh?
I wonder if our site members can have a close look at any L59's in their collections for the repair markings?
It would be interesting to come up with another cross or two for our database.
Lets keep this thread alive Gents, Post any L59 marking cobinations factory applied and recall marked!
