Hello

If anyone of you members here have got any old picture of your iron crosses with some rust on it, large amounts or small amounts, it would be interesting to see now and then pictures of these crosses.. just to see if it has actually spread/eaten more of the iron.

It doesn't matter if the picture is 3 years old or 10... but if you can show those, with brand new photos, maybe we can find out what we can do to:
a) stop the rust (atleast from spreading)
b) slow down the rusting prosess




I'm not sure if this thread should be in the Conservation/Safe Keeping Forum, but this is strictly an Iron Cross thread and it I think it will fit in nice at the home of the Iron Cross

Will you live that long? Not even close!!

Just keep it (water) dry and (brush) clean.

Thats good news, that the core ain't rusting away that quick... but its still a shame that the core is rusting away.

I guess there ain't really a lot of things to do with this, or destroy it another way...

Stopping corrosion

How about coating with some lacquer? or is it a no-no?
or the best way would be to keep it in a dry box?

any other ways to Stopping corrosion?

Like Dietrich said, keep it in a very low humidity environment. This is the best we can do. Obviously there are some examples that you should NOT brush at all for good reason, although there are some crosses that need a good cleaning. And, a coating of wax or 'snake oil' may loosen what's left. And the modern chemicals in today's lacquers may cause more harm than good. IMO, they're better left alone, just a little cleaning where needed.

This is an example that I thought best to just leave as is...

I think the lines or spidering due to corrosion that can be seen on many Iron Cross cores looks great.

the 1940s were only 70 years ago. what will happen when we're all really old? whats gonna happen in another 70 years? i hope we will not find coreless iron crosses .....
