    my new S&L EK1

    Hi guys-

    I'd like to share a new addition with you, an unmarked EK1 made by (I believe) Steinhauer & Lück. Lots of wear and a nice patina on the core and frame which give it that special character I look for in all of my crosses.

    I welcome all thoughts and comments... Thanks!

                      No, the document did not come with the cross. As for the catch, I don't know what material it is made out of. Copper crossed my mind, but it almost looks like Tombak with a heavy patina (???)

                        enjoy it, it was my first EK1, i bought it at 16 years old.... but needs money,....
                        why all the items you had looks nicest when they are not in your property?

                          Does anyone know for sure what the hinge and catch are made out of? Copper plated steel, or solid copper?

                          Is this a common trait for other EK1's produced by this maker?

                              The features this EK displays put it's manufacturing date 42 or so and that is why it could not go with that 1944 document .
                              The previous owner gave a good description on it I see now . Due to the early cooper use restrictions would think the catch is not solid copper , hard to tell, ... the oxid color does hint solid copper . The scratches where the catch sits on the frame look like bare copper in the picture- being hit from the pin going in and out , can you tell ? In any case this copper coating is very thin and scratches would brake through it to the base metal quickly . The wear on the catch shows the silver plating just about all rubbed off .
                              The pin anchor on the other hand is brass . It somewhat resembles a W&L pin part . The 'chuncky' catch S&L used .
                              Especially for the Ni-alloy frame a copper coating was a usual procedure when plating with Silver . A production step that was early on -cut out- do to metal restrictions and to stream line production . Brass having copper in it - makes any copper they could get go further and the silver alloy would adhere to it quite well too . Silver being restricted forced the change over to just Ni plated frames on German silver(=Ni alloy) frames .
                              Assembly/finishing procedures did change a lot during the war for all makers .
                              Here 2 EK2 examples showing some changes S&L crosses went through .
                              Different colored frosting due to different base metal composition (left silver-right Ni ) .
