    German Cross in Gold

    Hello everyone
I'm new here but very happy to be here among
    you fellow collectors.
I've only a few items in my collection in regards to German
    warfare.
It's this latest one that I have my eye on that brings me to you
    for your experienced opinion.
It comes from e medals and from what I've read on another thread
Barry is an honest guy to deal with.
But also as I've read here that even the good dealers sometimes
have fake items for sale. Even though it be unintentional.

Anyways, he has a near mint German Cross in Gold by maker 20
which is C.F. Zimmerman from what I understand. In its case.
Very expensive I would say but if it's the real deal then it's
well worth the investment as well as collectability.
Barry's been very helpful in regards to his layaway plan as well
as putting up with my persistant questions and request.

So I give you my pics on the matter.
Mind you, I'm rather excited about this piece as it's one that I've been
waiting a loooooooong time to acquire.
But I don't want to look a fool for buying crap.
I don't have a URL to use and it doesn't seem that I'm able to upload pics
off of my computer. So all I've got is this page from Barry's site.
    So here goes......................http://www.emedals.ca/catalog.asp?item=GRA1369#bigPic

Thanks to whoever can help me on this one.

              Thanks guys,
So far so good I'd say.
I'll be saving this for my daughter when the time comes along with
everything else I have for her.

If it weren't for his layaway plan.
This probably wouldn't be an option.

Barry is a great guy to deal with. However you should be aware that there is some controversy regarding the "dotted date" Zimmermann crosses. If you do a search in the forum you will find several threads on the subject. If you are contemplating the purchase you should read these and then make a decision.

"dotted date", Duh, how obvious is that.

                          WOW !!!
Okay I needs to get more educated on this.
From what I just saw on John H. post in regards to dotted dates.
The back of his cross looks to be the same as mine............

I agree that whatever the truth may be, there is certainly controversy about the "dotted-date" crosses. The existence of controversy with these crosses that can affect resale, etc. is just a fact and not an opinion. At the recent OVMS Show of Shows, I witnessed the variety of opinions first-hand. Some dealer/collectors said they would buy one without hesitation, while others said they wouldn't touch one--due to the controversy, if nothing else. Like it or not, such things do affect many important things about investment value and consensus of authenticity. As a general rule, I steer clear of controversy whenever possible.

I'm not trying to actually influence your decision, since I really don't know the truth about whether such "dotted crosses" are original or not. I'm not even personally looking for any debates about that particular issue. I just think it's always best to at least be aware of what current opinions truly are. In any case, I'm sure you'll do your homework and make the best decision for yourself. Like someone said above, there's sufficient archived discusions right here on the forum to help you make up your own mind.

                            Good luck,

                            Chris

I learned very quickly that it pays to do a search the forum before asking for help or puchasing an item. Just asking for help may verify that an item is period, but I find that reading up on all discussions regarding a certain item gives me a good background, and I retain much more for future reference.
In regards to this cross, I personally would not have a problem with purchasing it. I have followed the discussions and tend to agree that it is a period piece. But if this is to be the only example in your collection, you should know everything about it.
