i picked up this group of medals today, first saw them posted by another member as these surfaced in western pa. a while back. the kc is marked 900 1 on the lower cross arm. also in the group is a mint example of the first class social welfare cross. looks like it was in a case the way the ribbon is creased, now if i can find an empty case for it! the patina on the war merit cross kc is quite nice, having been untouched for decades. should i dip it to bring it back to its unissued look, or leave the patina alone ? what is the thought on this process, does it hurt the value, will it patina again after awhile? thanks for looking.

......One thing that cleaning it will NOT DO.....and that is.....lower the value. Do with it as you will.

I beg to disagree with Bruce....dipping can ruin a medal, and particulary so with the RK/KVK as any traces of the frosting can be removed as well as the tarnish...
Please dont clean this piece.....sell it to me first !

If the language barrier is not fooling me, you mean by dipping -> dipping it in a cleaning solvent?
Boy, oh boy...
My first medal comes to my mind, a KVK medal which I put in something called Silver Dip.
And correct that name was.
Off was the bronze and silver the medal was!
So when ever see the 'only silver KVK medal' pass, you know it became silver by stupidity...

ok, i promise i will leave it as is, the patina is just too nice to eliminate. i do wonder though, when we see these medals for sale at the big shows, by the big dealers, why are those medals in pristene, mint condition, no patina at all? how does a silver medal not patina
with age?
