I noticed that there's only one person with that name listed on the German wargraves database and he happens to be an unteroffizier.

That's in Hungary.
Viet Scherzer published a book on Luftwaffe DKiG holders thought it's little more than a list giving name, rank, unit and date of award.
The best person to ask for more info is Larry de Zeng, one of the research forum moderators. He is 'Mr.Luftwaffe' and if anyone could tell you more i think it would be him.Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.
