    jon,

Here are all three, or two, to study...

The head and beak does look different on the 3rd spange, which now resembles the blurry bird in the middle...??? My goodness, jon, I believe you are right. The head on the left bird stands alone.

These spangen will drive a person batty. The more I study these, the more I really like the 1st class spanges.

So, what's your ultimate verdict, jon? Do you think this spange is an imposter?

                Hi everyone,

I just poped in here. I see indeed little differences. On the number "1" for instance. I do not believe the spanges that showed all come from the same die.

                Regards, Theo

                  Hello Theo

By the 'same die', do you possibly mean the die was 'reworked', changing the characteristics like the '1' and the eagle's head and beak?

IMHO they are all the same, and all OK

                      and also
maybe a thin piece of paper can be slipped behind the spange, and with a pin-head... maybe a 'rubbing' can be made of the mm? who was the buyer?
                      regards

I also see a difference in the number "1" and also the beak!

But that might just be my old eyes?

                          Come on Robert!

Spangen - just as for the iron cross - are hand finished. The head and beak of the e-stand eagle has not been hand finished particularly well, the one posted by you earlier is very nicely finished. It's that simple.

The identical die characteristics - including the distinctive vertical row of stippling running down the left hand side of the '1' - indicate to me that both spangen in this thread are from the same die.

I beleive 'Re-worked dies' is a dangerous term that becomes more and more prevalent on this forum and should most definitely not be used this freely just because there is a piece of unfinished excess metal around the beak of a spange.

                          It'll just confuse people!!

Thanks Marshall. I don't know - I thought I'd ask. This has been the case with some EKII frame dies. I can understand the finishing process as you described. There still seems to be a division amongst some who believe these come from two different sets of dies. Personally, I believe there are just too many similarities to say this. I've tried to make these collages to illustrate this.

Spange on Estand - now in my hands

ahnenerbe's (now my) spange is marked with a small impressed "L/16".

                              I think it's a good Steinhauer & Luck!

that's interesting to hear. So it's impressed like you'd normally see on an L/16 marked EK1, right?
any chance of better/bigger pics of the front (no rush)
                                regards
