im getting there gradually, its hard to tell fakes from real when you first start collecting, ive been turned over once on ebay and never again.
Can anyone tell me, ive got a IC 1st class, and the militaria dealer in the city tells me its a fake purely because it doesnt have a magnetic core, even i know this is incorrect, i bought the cross from detlev niemann, so its definatly not a fake. What are the classic signs of a fake? Im new to all this.

The bar to the iron cross, as already stated is a bad fake.

Fake EKs come in a few different guises, but a good place to start learning is in the fakes gallery on this forum. Also, do a search for the '333' EK fakes, as well as Floch.

As for an item coming from any particular dealer making it automatically genuine, don't fall into that trap as this, unfortunately isn't true. All dealers, no matter how honest or reputable will occasionally get caught out themselves, or new material comes to light which casts doubt on items previously thought to be genuine originals. With the item coming from Detlev it is unlikely to be a fake, (but not unheard of), and as you say a non magnetic core certainly doesn't make it a fake.

Post some good, clear full face on photos of it, back and front and the members here will soon say if it is good or not - and possibly even who made it.

thank you David youve been a good help, once i manage to work out how to post photos ill post a few of my collection, all are unmarked apart from my kc.
