RK of the Youngest Recipient

Wow amazing story and a amazing cross from the hero's neck.

I purchased the cross as part of a group from D Niemann, it came with many of his original award documents. The 'Iron Time' pictures an RK, EK1 and EK11 supposedly from Hermes, maybe the picture in that book is from the museum. On hermes own personal account, his decorations were taken when captured by the russians. He had however, recieved two RKs, one of which he posted home to his parents after the award ceremony. What I am trying to establish is whether it is likely that this is one of his crosses, or whether it is matched to the documents.

Have you contact Othmar Hermes? I think he is still allive.

Martin, very nice, I have the same set of photos. Hermes had to re-train to write with his left hand on account of loosing his right arm, which might account for his scrawl of a signature!

Harry, did not know that...thats explains the handwriting.

But Mr. Hermes is still able and in a position to write back. I am thankful to many KC holders who still are so friendly to write back and send a signed Autogramm...

I have in my collection this original pieces from Othmar Hermes:

- Certificate for the Iron Cross 2nd Class
- Close-combat-clasp bronce - S&L/Lüdenscheid
- Iron Coss 1. Class in Case - Deumer/Lüdenscheid
- Woundbadge black

and in copies all his other papers.

Got them from the guy who bought the group directly from Hermes.
Unfortunately he split the group when he sold it to a German Dealer and held these items as a souvenir.

Well, it would be perfect if all were reunited. I hope the both of you can come to some arrangement.

On a side-line, did the loss of a limb only result in the silver wound badge? I had always thought it would have been gold.

I was dubious about these items....the EKII document has the wrong date, the award was given on 12th August 1943. The original document is still in the posession of Herr Hermes, here is an image of it. It is signed by his CO, and not a Generalleutnant. The RK and the rest of the grouping, have been reunited with him also.

One knights cross from Hermes was sold in a german auctions house a few years ago ! (Only knights cross no papers of him)!
