I can't make out the pics that well, but I'm not of the opinion it's paint. My Russian Horde piece has a similar dark coloring on the very inside of the frame. Personally, I feel this is tarnished (patina) of the silver frame where the frosting was not applied during assembly

Thats a very interesting article. The only thing one must know is that the author speaks about how one can manufacture in bad times and it's not the one and only way.
