It's the only piece I have with this silver wash. Perhaps you're right, to prevent from rust. It would surely look good with the paint all worn off. And it looks like real nickel silver.
I'm not sure if mine has the silver wash, the flash brought out a silver colour admittedly. I'm sure it's not as bright in the flesh, it looks more grey. I'm not able to put my hands on the cross until next week but I'll check it out.
