Can we clear up some terms?

On EKs and RKs I hear a lot of words interchangably used. Also learned a new on from another thread

    Oese
    Jump ring
    suspension ring
    suspension loop
    eyelet
    ring
    and a lot of others.

Can we get a clear vocabulary for these things so we are all on the same page?

    Best, Sal

    Sure Sal,

I'm with you. Since you started this thread, what do you want to call the small (jump ) ring that connects the cross to the larger ring? And what is 'Oese'?

I think this is a great idea. For people like me who have been in the hobby for less than a year and don't know a lot of these terms it would be very useful.
      Good job Sal

        how about "Fred"

seriously, I don't care what we call em Robert as long as we always call each part the same thing (even if it has multiple names)

An Oese apparently is the german word for the ring that is a part of the frame on an RK. I don't know if that applies to the ring that is soldered on to an ek2. Although in the thread I learned that in 2 different people each posted with a pic that circled a different part.

The "oese" or "öse" is a term for ANY ring that you put something through to connect two objects

            This is an Oese:

This little ring. No matter what kind of medal it's on.

So are you wanting to start with the EK's? For the small ring I'm in favor of using suspension loop, suspension ring or jump ring. What have others in the past used most commonly? I'm open to anything others suggest.

I don't deal much in RK's as of yet, so whatever that crowd does is fine with me.

I think we need some more folks participating here (at least Robert and I will know what we are talking about when we speak to each other )

The pic I posted is for any and all medals, not just the RK. I almost regret using that as an example...

I would call the larger ring that the ribbon goes through (stay with me here): The ribbon ring.

'The ribbon ring' sounds good, Hank.

For the small ring, how about 'suspension loop', or would you prefer 'ring'?

No That was a good example Hank! if we used that term universally that would be great!

lets do this. Ek2 only. what have people been calling the "ribbon ring" and "öse" so far??
If folks could post like this to stay clear:

                        Ribbon ring: I believe also called a __________ .
                        öse: I believe also called a ___________.

Then we could get an idea of what folks think and have been using and how much term confusion there really is.

                          A poll, OK.

Ribbon ring: I believe also called a 'ribbon ring'.
ose: I believe also called a 'jump ring'. I picked this up from another member. I believe I called it the 'suspension loop' before that.

                          Others?

I have always called the small ring at the top of an EK2 the "Jump ring" and the larger ring that the ribbon goes through the "Suspension ring".

The same system is used for other awards, for example "tear drop suspension ring",found on SS service awards is the ring that the ribbon goes through. The "Bevilled ring"at the top of any of these awards is known as the "Jump ring".

"Loop" and "Eyelet" are terms used for RK,s for similar pieces of hard ware found on them.A loop on an Rk is very different in construction and appearance to a suspension ring on an EK2 as you would know.An "eyelet" is also in a different position(side on) compared to the position of a jump ring on an EK2.

I have never heard of the terms"Loop" and "Eyelet" used in reference to EK2,s.Its always been "Suspension ring" and "Jump ring".

These two illustrations are from the book, For Fuhrer & Fatherland Vol 1, 1977 edition by LTC J. Angolia.

I think these are perfectly apt terms and make sense to me, I've often quoted these diagram remarks.

Note: on the cross illustration it has a suspension loop for this diagram denoting more the resemblance of an RK fixture, would it be an EK2 I would call the circular ring that the ribbon is threaded through and attached through the cross loop as a ring as indeed it is on the 'medal' diagram (see below)
