How was the General KIA? Leading from the front I assume but I'd be interested in the details if anyone knows.

      Thanks,
      Mike

        Hi Mike,
Cool film. Generaloberst Eduard Dietl died in a plane crash on June 23, 1944 (after visiting Hitler at the Obersalzberg). On July 1, 1944 Hitler posthumously awarded him the Oakleaves and Swords to his RK (72nd recipient). At the time of his death, Dietl was commanding the Lappland Army.

        Regards,
        Jody

            Hi Mike,
Thanks. Since I am a history teacher I have to be fast with the information or the students will go to sleep.

Very interesting display of medals and decoprations on the two funeral pillows.

Besides the two KCs, one with just the Oaks and the other with the Oaks and Swords, a destroyer badge as well as what looks to be a PO with Diamonds is shown.

Great film clip. Thanks for the link.

Interesting footage. Can anyone identify the other RK holders in the clip?

Dietl was commander of the 20 Gebirgs Armee. The first sequence of film shows him arriving for a 'wargame' in the North Norwegian town of Kirkenes close to the Finnish border and in the area of the XIX Gebirgs Korps. I have some still shots from the event and it was amongst the last film\photos taken of Dietl prior to his leaving Scandinavia fro the last time.

Most people don't realise that the aircraft crash in which Dietl died was far more serious than simply his loss. In fact it was the single worst aircraft accident of the war as far as general officer casualties go. Also onboard were General der Gebirgstruppe Karl Eglseer, commander of the XVII Gebirgskorps, Generalleutnant Franz Rossi, commander of divisions gruppe Rossi and the Petsamo area, General der Infanterie Thomas von Wickede commander of the X Korps.

Good music, too! "Siegfried's funeral march" from the Götterdämmerung (Richard Wagner). The original is a lot longer (and in better quality)
