Here is a nice cased WW I EK with attached Spange that has always been one of my favorites. It has a Leistungsgemeinschaft number stamped on the reverse but I cannot make it out; looks to be either L/13, L/18 or possibly L/16. The inside top of the case is stamped LDO and it still has an original 13 DM sticker on the bottom of the case. I picked this one up in Germany in the mid-1970s.

Homer,
What a treat! I'd have guessed L/18 for Mayer but the Spange does not appear to match Mayer examples. I don't have my references with me, so I can't type the Spange at the moment. I'm sure someone will shortly though.

I'm back home and have just been through Gordon Williamson's book. It seems Pieter Verbruggen owns (or owned) a near identical example with a definite L/18 mark on the cross. I guess the Spange is more than likely an unmarked Mayer variant in this case then.

I did look very hard at Deumer but imo the shape of the eagle's chest is quite different upon close comparison - so is the location/size of the swas, the eagle's legs and the second number 9.

There are two pictures in Gordon's book, one page 172 and an other 465, those are pinbacks, but cross and the eagle look very similar, and funny thing is, one in section with originals and an other in repro section.
... also look at the eagle on page 182 bottom........Last edited by AlikN; 03-15-2007, 04:12 AM.
