      Hi Thomas,
I belive all non-magnetic EK2's to be early war. This would include the zinc example you show.

early war time cross? I allways thought that zinc was used
at the end off the war .

          Hello

Zinc was used during the war for many different awards. With some it is accepted that the later war produced pieces used zinc, as opposed to say the buntmetal of the earlier versions. However, I too believe that it is the earlier EKs that are to be found with non ferous cores, especially as the authorities overseeing the makers of these awards specifically enforced the materials that had to be used in them - e.g. an iron core. Manufacturers were warned quite early in the war that the use of anything other than iron for the core was forbidden, and to companies making these the loss of the right to manufacture an award during war time would mean quite some hit on their prestige and profits.

A nice EK by the way.

          Regards
          David
