    Spange discussion

    Hello Gents,

I have this Spange on E-Stand at the moment, and I have been asked to bring it to this site for discussion.

This is a piece purchased from Barry at www.emedals.ca, who deals with Detlev. I don't see a problem, other than the "3" is different from the standard one.

    Your comments would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Bill

      Hello

I'm really not sure about this one. At a first glance I thought, based on the numerals in the date box, that it might be an intermediary bar, (spange), - that this the versions in between the 1st and 2nd pattern bars. However, the style and angle of the sides of the date trapezium look like the 2nd patterns ones. So I don't think it is an intermediary bar, and it certainly isn't a 1st pattern.

Therefore it has to be a 2nd pattern bar. I have searched my reference books and the forum but haven't found anything to match this against. Of course, just because I haven't seen a bar with this numeral configuration doesn't make this a fake. However, although there can be noticeable differences in the style of the date numbers on known originals, I don't like the look of the ones on this item.

My own opinion, and this is only my personal opinion, is that it is not something I would have in my collection.

Hopefully some of the real bar experts will chime, and with any luck prove me wrong and be able to give you a on this piece.

      Regards
      David

Thanks for starting this thread Bill. Can you provide high res scans of just the spange so we can see feather and wreath details please?
        Thanks

Very strange have never encountered this style before, date and spacing between date is unusual. The eagle wing ends also resembles some of the 1st pattern spanges and looks very sharp. A pic of the pin attachment may also be of help. All the best

What's really wierd are the lack of curls to the "3"s and "9"s.

Do you have a GOA from Detlev? Or just the receipt?

              Hi Darrell,

No GOA from Detlev...Barry bought a number of items from Detlev, and intimated that this was one of them. I'd like to think that Barry would refund my purchase price if this was not an original. It was described as an original to me.

              Cheers

see an earlier thread of mine:
                http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ghlight=spange
I HOPE thats the right one (I'm battling a new laptop!)

I held hope for this style of spange, but until some hard data emerges, I don't like them... I'd love to know some more
                regards

Thanks for your thread, Jon.......It/they do look like mine.

OK.....I couldn't resist...........I gently pried the upper prongs open, and found no markings on the reverse.

                  Cheers

It would be interesting to hear if Barry got this from Detlev or had it examined by him.

Detlev HAS sold this style of spange before...
I asked him about this style, but he said he could only comment on individual ones actually in his hand. Maybe some of this pattern are real, and others are not? Definately some look 'faker' than others. Seems like quite a few have this all over black finish. I wish I knew more.
                      regards

                        Hi Gents,

I'll e-mail Barry and see whether my Spange actually came from Detlev.

                        Cheers

I had a quick reply from Barry. He has kindly offered to refund my money. He is a "straight shooter".

(I still think that it is an original)

                          Cheers

A speedy refund arrived from Barry for the Spange.

A top-notch dealer. He believes the Spange to be original. I do not disagree with him.

                            Cheers
