Spanish Cross in Gold without Swords?

    Hi Guys,

I was looking at Agolia's For Fuhrer and Fatherland, specifically the Spanish Cross section.

He makes reference to a Gold Spanish Cross without Swords being produced but never being officially awarded.

I have a Spanish Cross without Swords in my collection - I have always wondered is it was a Gold or Bronze version.

It is unmarked, but is considerably brighter than most of the crosses I have seen posted here.

It has the gold look as opposed to the bronze/copper color.

I would like to post a pic of it but I am not an association member.

Can I pay for the membership using paypal?

I am not too keen on giving my credit card info out on the 'net.

Anyway, could someone post this pic for me in the meantime?

    Thank you,

    Vinnie

      Carson,

Although no Gold crosses without swords were awarded, I seem to recall being offered such a piece by a major dealer in the past so maybe some were produced as samples?

It has however been established that the hallmarked silver cross without swords was in fact a silver cross with the swords removed so why produce a gold cross without swords if there was no intention to awrd any? IMO it is probably a bronze cross which has been cleaned up.

Email me photos and I will post them for you.

Spanish Cross in Gold without Swords

Carson Kitt has emailed me photos to post.

IMO this is a very nice example of the Bronze grade, not Gold.

Thank you for posting the photos Stan.

I met Bill Stump at the Show of Shows in 2003 and he said it was an original example.

Stupid me forgot to ask if he thought it was a Bronze or Gold.

It could very well just be a Bronze, but it's something that has been bugging me.

                Than you again,

                Vinnie

That is a bronze one. . If it were a gold one that would be very bad indeed considering the swords have been cut off.

I confirm Sal's answer. It is a bronze cross.

                      Spanish Cross

                      Hello,
I also agree it is bronze, but Sal is correct, it did have swords on it at one time.

                      Regards,
                      Jody

                        Jody, Jacques, and Sal-

Thank you very much for your help!

What kind of value would you put on it?

I haven't been able to find a similar one for sale.

                        Thank you again,

                        Vinnie

                          Detlevs price guide says 575euros.
Yours is very nice and I would say it is an award piece.
The swords being cut off is not a detraction at all because some manufacturers had only one die and cut the swords as needed for the non swords cross. can't see any purpose to cutting them off post war on a bronze cross as it would not help the value at all. On sliver crosses on the other hand, one needs to be very careful if you find one with swords cut as the value of the scarce silver with out swords is much higher than silver wiith swords.

                          Best, Sal

                            Hi Sal-

I am a little lost - what makes it an award piece?

May I ask how you can tell that the swords were cut off?

                            Thank you,

                            Vinnie

                              Hi Vinnie,
if you look where the swords would be you will see they were cut off. there are little flat spots. Also on the reverse you can see the lines where the swords once were on the eagles. I suspect this one sat a while before being cut off. As to being an award piece that is a speculation based on the quality and lack of ldo markings. It looks like an early one to me but that is just my speculation.

                              Best, Sal
