EK1 Spange - Russian Hoard Perhaps

    Hi Guys,

I picked this one up off the estand a while back now and have just learnt that the so called 'Russian Hoard' of EK1's also included Spanges.

Could this be one of them.

It's not as nice as my EK1 but the case is very good and the Spange itself is a nice example.

This case bears a very close association to my EK1 case hence my thought that they are somehow related.

Piccys are a bit 'washed out' in evening spring time sun - hopefully they are OK for a diagnosis.

    Thanks in advance...

          Hi Chris,

As I mentioned before the only items in the Russian horde, as far as I know, werre EK1s. No spanges were found.

Although the case has a rectangular push button like a Mayer piece, I dont believe the spange is a Mayer spange.

I dont have any reference here but most Mayer spanges I have seen have the characteristic square pin and not the tapered pin. I am sure if you do a search on the WAF you can find out the maker. I might be mistaken though.

It would seem odd because as I understand it the "russian horde" were awards that were in supply to be awarded to soldiers on the eastern front. I can't see that many spangen being needed for this case.

            best, Sal

Hi Hagwalther, does not look like a Mayer to me, wrong style date and reverse set up. Looks like a nice original dont know about it coming from the Russian horde though. Unknown maker would be my opinion. All the best
