    schinkel ek 1, odd "9"

this one came in last week, is there anyone with a similar schinkel?

The "9" on this cross is styled pretty unusual.

    Opinions, anyone??

    Thanks for looking,

    Ben

Have you noticed that the needle opens to the left?

No Peter, now that you mention it...

Not a feature you see very often.....

Wow Ben, You did hide this Schinkel wel for me.

              That's a real beauty.
This is the first time I see this Schinkel as an EK1.

I have the second class look-alike that came with a COA of DN.
This variant is also at page 65 in Gordon's book!
I will send you some pictures. You can post them If you want.

              Well observed Peter!
You don't see the opening to the left often.

              Regards,
              Luud

well, I can't reveal anything at the same time, 2 schinkels within 3 days can be bad for your heart

Please send me the pics, and I will post them.

If anyone fancies educating me here then i have a couple of questions.

                        1. If the schinkels are one piece are they completely silver with the black being painted over the silver centre. Or are they not silver .
                        2. Why do they command such a high price compared to say , a K&Q or the likes .
                        3. Surely if there was a way for these to be made , why did the schinkel maker choose to have so many differences from other makers . i.e. number 9`s , opposite catch sides , one piece not three .

                        Thanks in advance ... Stomper

                          Stomper:
1 : The one piece I had, I presumed it was silver with a painted centre.
I managed to get hold of another one, with better paint but wear to the rim.
It turns out that the first-class schinkels ek1 brass-coated steel, with a silver plating, and then painted

                          I forgot the iron ...

                          2. The are expensive because they are (very) rare...

                          And you 3rd question I can't answer.....

                          Regards,
                          Ben

Those are all good questions, and I hope some of our members provide answers to them. And here's another question about Schinkels that I've never had answered: If this type of cross exists because they were made from leftover frames from the Imperial period, why do one-piece versions exist?

Not all shinkels are 1-piece; from my limited experience, most are 3-piece manufacture, with the 1-piece being relatively scarce (I may be wrong here). Also, schinkel-type crosses are the among the very earliest of the 1939 EKs produced, and were made before strict standardisation of design elements were enforced.
