Very odd thing, don't really know what to think of it.
Has anyone ever seen something like this before?
According to the seller it's a very early private purchase, probably 3 piece in silver.

Asking price will be around 250/ 275 euro's, but, as I already mentioned: no provenance whatsoever.

Never seen this setup before, but details are crisp, and nothing yells fake so far...
Tough one.

Could the hooks be used for display on some sort of cloth item (ie flag or banner)? Also interesting is that it does not appear to ever have had a hinge or catch added to it.

It is a nice looking cross, and at that price definitely worth considering.

According to the current owner the cross was made for a major in the early war-years, so it must have been attached to a unfiform.
The set-up is like some ww1 crosses, but since it was custom-made (...) it's impossible to find any reference.
I have to admit that I like the high swas and date, and the sharp details.
The cross might be (?) silver.

IMO the core paint looks to have been degraded by the soldering job. For what ever reason the 1813 era rings were added to this piece after it was originaly asembled. This really doesn't make any sense since this type of attachment system was passe once the hinge, pin and catch was perfected between 1813 and 1870. I have never encountered an original '14 EKI with this style of rings. I would love to see one.

Too bad, since it looks to be a good round 3 EKI. As mentioned above the resale of this example would be a hard sell.

Another question that should be asked is if there is no provenance whatsoever how does the present owner know it was made for a major early in the war?

Just some thoughts.
