Apparently the soldier who earned this award wanted to be sure that he did not lose it, as he had holes made in it to secure it to his tunic.

I sure hope it was the recipient and not some brain dead collector trying to modify it for mounting purposes ... you would think a soldier awarded something this prestigious wouldn't drill godawful holes (and uneven at that) into a DKiS

My thoughts exactly. If he was going to sew it to his tunic I would think the pin would be removed and holes added top, bottom, left and right.
